Rose overview

Rose is the focused Linux runtime distribution used by the Windows WSL2 installation. It packages and starts STATIC with the files and Linux facilities needed for the supported packet path. It is the environment around the proxy, not a second proxy or an internet exit.

Where Rose fits

The Windows browser points to STATIC’s local proxy listener in WSL2. The desktop app normally starts STATIC explicitly; a bundled manual startup script can mount bpffs, attach the ttl_editor.o traffic-control program to applicable egress interfaces, and launch the binary using the Windows-mounted runtime config. STATIC owns HTTP, TLS, page injection, profile selection, and the local control API. The external packet program acts on supported outgoing packets when attached and synced.

The distribution includes /opt/404/static, /opt/404/ttl_editor.o, and /opt/404/404-init.sh. The Windows installation guide covers the operator path; STATIC’s packet boundary explains how active profile values reach the Linux eBPF map.
